When the 3D printer was first created the creators dreams were endless, but did they ever image that their technology would move into the world of fashion?
More and more companies in the fashion industry are becoming interested in the opportunities that 3D printing open up to their company. We are the generation of customization and the newly emerging world of fashion 3D printing makes it easier for a company to comply to the need for customization at an affordable cost. 3D printing gives anyone the opportunity to be a fashion designer from the comfort of his or her own computer screen.
How would you like to be able to design the blueprints of a custom swimsuit from the comfort of your own home and it be print it to fit your body perfectly? In the customizable generation of today, 3D printing opens doors in the fashion world that have never been opened before. Continuum, a San-Francisco-based start up, offers their customers the ability to design a swimsuit to be 3D printed. The suit is made out of a created nylon that is built with layers of plastic powder fused together with a laser. A bikini top from Continuum runs from $250 to about $300, because the technology is still being perfected the suit comes with some imperfections. One imperfection being that the rings that link the bikini top together turn yellowish when in direct sunlight. As the fashion world continues to advance the products quality and wearablity will increase and the prices will decrease, making fashion 3D printing apart of the runway of the future.

I believe that this could be something that could be utilized in the future for sure. The downside of having something very innovative is that the costs will be pretty high, which will deter many people from purchasing this product.
ReplyDeleteWill the high prices cause this type of technology to die off? Probably not, but this technology will start to become more useful to people as it gets more affordable. overall, I think that the continued research of this product will prove to be very useful!
I’ve never considered 3D clothes before reading this. I bet it won’t take them long to work out the issues with imperfections. Next, it’s just a matter of getting the price down to a competitive point. I can see the ability to create your own style as a big selling point. The ability to get a near perfect fit would be an even bigger selling point. They just need to develop a devise that scans the customer’s body to generate multiple precise measurements so they can actually make a “perfect fit”. I’m excited to see where this all goes.
ReplyDeleteThis is definitely very intriguing, I'm not sure if it would be the future of fashion because of how expensive it is, but I definitely think it will be a trend setter and have a small piece of the fashion market. I really like the idea of being the designer of the clothes that you buy, it gives the customer more control and therefore gives the clothing more sentimental meaning and importance.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds really cool! I love the thought of having not to look for a tailor and putting my own creative spin on clothes. The price is definitely a little pricey, but i believe that will help with a possible issue of just anyone using the experience. I believe that exclusiveness is always important in fashion, and if this is fashions next big thing they should keep that theme.
